My name is Tamar Melkonian. I am representing Amaras Art Alliance, which is a non-profit organization founded in 1990 in Watertown, Massachusetts with the goal of promoting Armenian arts and culture here in the United States. We work with both aspiring and professional performers, writers, and musicians.

The name “Amaras” comes from the world’s oldest Christian monastery in Artsakh. It was established in the 4th century by St. Gregory the Illuminator, and it is where Mesrob Mashtots, inventor of the Armenian alphabet, founded the first educational center in the year 405 AD.

Amaras Art Alliance strives to create opportunities for people to get involved in Armenian arts and culture, to observe and enjoy the traditions and customs of our diverse communities and help keep our society vibrant.

Unfortunately, the forces that oppose our people today threaten to destroy the existence of our ethnicity, religion, traditions, and artistry. Today, Armenians have been uprooted from their homeland and once again become victim to genocide and ethnic cleansing. We are here asking for your help to recognize and resist this attack. Together we stand to strengthen our resolve and to preserve that rich cultural heritage and ensure it thrives and prospers for generations to come.

During these difficult times for our nation and around the world, it’s a true testament of perseverance for our communities to come together and console one another with the healing power of solidarity.

We, who proudly bear the name Amaras, now have a heavier duty, to always remember this name and elevate its history and importance. Thank you.
